The Local Environment

The local area is a farming community on the north shore of Lake Erie. Surrounding farms produce everything from grain crops, to fruits and vegetables, to maple syrup. Nearby are several Farmers Markets tempting you with fresh local produce. There is even an award winning Winery, taking advantage of the mild climate. Pinegrove Haven is located on a 200 acre property with a wide variety of Carolinean trees, a large pine grove, and cedar windbreaks. Nearby are designated walking trails, waterfowl sanctuaries, historical sites, and notable parks – including two of Canada’s finest jewels, Point Pelee National Park and Rondeau Provincial Park.

Mindful of the local natural heritage, the Clark family takes an active role in caring for the land, the birds, and the trees.

Birding

We are located in an important location in the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways.  The peninsulas of Rondeau and Pelee, which are both nearby, are two critical rest stops for birds on their way to and from the Arctic.
Whether you visit the parks or watch from the garden, you have a great chance at seeing some famous visitors, including shorebirds, warblers, and waterfowl. We are lucky to have a lot of local friends too; from the little ones on the bird feeder to hawks and vultures circling high on the thermals.
And don't mistake the family of ducks that wander around as wild - they came for a visit years ago and have not seen fit to leave!
